Independence Brewing Company (IBC) is one of those popular hang-out places that does not needs any introduction, serving in Pune since quite long now. IBC also is known to serve some fantastic brews. So the obvious question, why does an already established place hosts a tasting event ! And the answer is, the tasting invite intended to showcase recently added tandoori items on their menu. Our host for the evening was Husein Upletawala, a well known foodie personality in the town and who himself is a food-blogger. I guess, after writing this name, review might not make too much of sense, people who know him will know what I mean 😉
Needles to say, the tasting at IBC began with brews. No point in trying to describe them, just go there and try them out yourselves. I loved their Hefeweizen.
Even before the tandoori-stuff was served, the lined-up marinated raw items next to the tandoor looked quite tempting, pictures will be enough to tell the story.
The Corn Chaat, served first-up, was made using corn, peanuts and chat masala. Onions, tomato and lime used for dressing made it quite palatable. The chaat has all the necessary ingredients to make it perfectly tangy.
The Tandoori Lamb Chops were simply mouth-savory, and the start of the evening. The meat was cooked to perfection, juicy and simply melted in mouth. The flavors were excellently balanced. It is always pleasing when meat just falls of the bone, makes eating less messy.
The Mutton Seekh Kebabs served were nicely prepared, consistently minced meat, not too dry and nice flavors and cooked to perfection.
Sarsowala Zinga, was again nicely done. The only debate was whether it had enough mustard flavor or not to justify the name ! That at times is always an issue with sea-food. Always a personal choice whether one prefers to retain the flesh flavor or want to suppress it. The Fish Amritsari Tikka also had nice marination masala again with very well balanced flavors.
Peshwari Tangdi Kebab, was creamy curtosiy use of cheese. The subtle flavor of saffron used in marination was impressive. Chicken legs were again cooked to perfection.
The other two variation of murgh tikkas served, Lassoni Murgh Tikka and Murgh Hariyali Tikka, were also excellently done. Very minor yet noticeable tweak in basic marination betwwen the two murgh tikkas.
It was quite impressive the way all the tandoori meat starters were cooked. The meat was tender and cooked to perfection and juicy. The consistency was bang on target with all the tandoori starters served.
The Vegetarian Tandoori Platter consisted of Bharwan Kumbh, Noorani Seekh, Achari Gobi, Bharwan Aloo and Kalimiri Paneer Tikka. Did not got the opportunity to either click or taste any part of the served platter. I overheard from fellow foodies of my gang, Bharwan Kumbh in particular was quite impressive. The Mediterranean Salad served before the mains was quite colourful and impressive in terms of presentation. The salad dressing was simply outstanding, sweet and sour.
When the time came for the mains, we were already fully loaded with the starters. Really no appetite left and were really reluctant to go with the mains. On Husien’s behest, following main dishes were ordered, Asian Inspired Pork Sizzler, Independence Burger and the Tenderloin Bulgogi.
Tenderloin Bulgogi, has charred grilled pork tenderloin topped with sesame seeds served with rice topped with egg and vegetables. Independence Burger also has grounded tenderloin patty and comes with fries served alongside. Asian Inspired Pork Sizzler had pork shoulder cooked with South Asian spices and served with rice.
So eventually it was all pork for the mains 😀
For the desserts it was Salted Caramel Dark Chocolate Tart, Lemon Orange Tart, Chocolate Souffle and Apple Pie.
My personal favorites will be Lemon Orange Tart and Chocolate Souffle.
I was a great evening with food and brews at the Independence Brewing Company. The soft old classics music played added a retro feeling to the evening. Services was prompt, although it took some time initially for things to kick-off, reason being unexpected crowd influx on a weekday.
