Restaurant Review: Hotel Shreyas, Deccan Gymkhana, Pune

Restaurant Name : Hotel Shreyas, R1242 B, Apte Road, Deccan Gymkhana, Pune

Date of Visit: 27th January 2017

An exclusive #FoodProwl (http://www.foodprowl.com/) food tasting event 🙂

Hotel Shreyas, is one of those nostalgic places in Pune that need-no-introduction to Punekars as well as to those outsiders staying since quite long now in Pune. Their dining hall is well known for serving Mahrashtrian Food. So the next obvious question that come’s to mind will be, why an event for foodies !

The sole purpose of this event was to invite foodies to try out their recently introduced Hurda Fest, which probably is the first time to my knowledge that a restaurant is hosting such a traditional Maharashtrian festival. Hurda (Coal Roasted Jowar) festival is a typical village fest that is typically organized somewhere from December to February when tender stalks of Jowar (Sorghum) are ready in farms. These Jowar stalks are barbecued and referred to as Hurda. The Hurda is served with Coconut and Peanut chutneys along-with Salt, Pepper and different spices as well as Curd and Jaggery. I myself was a first timer to Hurda and it took a couple of iterations before I managed to optimize the proportion of spices, chutney’s and other ingredients before getting the right balance. The final Hurda was delicious and enjoyable till the very last bite.

The HURDA

The Hurda festival was hosted for a very short span by Hotel Shreyas, as a result the place was thronged by the crowd who came to enjoy the event. With such a grand success, hosting the event for the first time, looking forward to Hotel Shreyas to host such traditional events in the future as well. The roof-top was transformed to create a village like environment.

The Hurda was followed by traditional Maharashtrian food on the offer for dinner. Gud-Podi, Pitla-Bhakri, Stuffed Brunjal, etc. albeit sounding simple food but fully appetizing and absolutely luscious. Taking the opportunity to specially mention the Kadhi served, really cannot remember the last time when I gulped some bowls of it. That explains how good it was…. 😀

I will simply conclude saying ‘ looking forward to Hotel Shreyas hosting such traditional events in the future as well’.
